Mountain homes with a lot of wood
Around Evergreen Lake, up through Hiwan and Soda Creek and out toward Bergen Park, many homes were built in the 1970s and 1980s with tongue-and-groove ceilings, cedar or pine paneling and stained trim. Some owners love the wood and want walls that complement it; others are ready to paint some of it. Both are reasonable, and the Paint Plan is where we work that out room by room — which surfaces stay natural, which get painted, and what sheen holds up.
Painting over wood is mostly a prep question. Knots bleed tannin through latex paint, and glossy varnish needs to be scuffed and primed with a stain-blocking primer before the topcoat will hold. We account for that in labor and materials so your quote reflects the real job.
Light and color at 7,000+ feet
Evergreen sits above 7,000 feet, and the light reflects it: clear, bright and cool on sunny days, then quickly gray under clouds or in the shade of tall pines. Many homes have large south- or west-facing windows paired with dark, tree-shaded rooms on the other side of the house. A single whole-house color rarely works in both.
We often recommend warmer whites and creamy neutrals that don't go gray in the shade, plus earthy greens, ochres and soft clay tones that sit comfortably next to wood. In high-ceiling great rooms we may lighten the ceiling a step to bounce light back down. You'll see all of it mocked up on photos of your own rooms before we paint.
Practical details for Evergreen projects
Dry mountain air helps paint cure, but cold mornings in shoulder season can slow things down, so we watch interior temperatures and ventilation. Long driveways, steep lots and snow can affect access, and we plan scheduling around that. Vaulted ceilings and lofts often need taller ladders or scaffolding, which we measure for during the walkthrough and include in the fixed price.
- Stain-blocking primer over knotty pine and cedar
- Vaulted and tongue-and-groove ceilings
- Lofts, open stairwells and catwalk railings
- Durable finishes for mudrooms and entries that see boots and dogs
