Mid-century homes between Golden and Wheat Ridge
Applewood is unincorporated Jefferson County, tucked between Golden, Lakewood and Wheat Ridge. Much of it was built out in the 1950s and 1960s — sprawling brick and frame ranches on generous lots, many with original hardwood floors, picture windows, built-ins and sometimes wood-paneled dens. Areas like Applewood Valley and the streets around Applewood Golf Course have a lot of that original character.
Homes of that age are almost always pre-1978, so lead-safe practices come with the territory whenever we sand or scrape painted surfaces. We also see a lot of hairline cracking where drywall or plaster has settled, and older oil-based trim that needs a bonding primer before new latex will stick.
Colors that suit mid-century architecture
Mid-century ranches tend to have low, horizontal lines and big windows framed by mature trees. In summer the light filtering through those trees adds a green cast; in winter, bare branches let in strong, low southern sun. Many owners want to update without erasing the period feel.
We often design around warm whites, soft mushroom and taupe neutrals, and a few deliberate accents — a deep green den, a muted blue bedroom, a painted built-in — that nod to the era without becoming a costume. Original wood paneling can stay as a feature, or be primed and painted if you want a brighter room. We'll show you both on photos of your space.
